Question

What is the velocity of projectile when it mooves perpendicular to initial velocity?

Open in App
Solution

Suppose the initial velocity, u, makes an angle of θ with the horizontal. When the velocity is perpendicular to initial velocity, it makes an angle of (90-θ) with the horizontal.

Since there is no acceleration in horizontal, horizontal velocity component will remain the same:

ucosθ = vcos(90-θ)
ucosθ = vsinθ
v= ucotθ
Hence, velocity of projectile when it moves perpendicular to initial velocity is ucotθ where u is the initial velocity.
