Question

What is the weakest type of bond?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Chemical bonds are formed by two or more atoms combined together by a means of the intermolecular force of attraction.
  2. Chemical bonds can be formed via electron transfer, i.e. by donating or accepting the electrons, and also by sharing the electrons.
  3. The chemical bonds formed between a more electronegative atom and an electropositive atom form an ionic bond.
  4. The more electronegative atom attracts the shared pair of electrons and so the other atom attains the slightly positive charge on it.
  5. Therefore, the weak bond is formed between the atoms and is called the ionic bond.
  6. The higher the electronegativity more polarized the molecule.
  7. Ionic bonds are stronger in crystal lattice but weaker in water.
  8. Example- Sodium chloride NaCl is an example of an ionic bond.
