Solution

  1. The chemical formula of tooth enamel is Ca3(PO4)2 (calcium phosphate).
  2. When the pH of the inside of the mouth lowers than 5.5, bacteria in our mouth become more active and corrosion of enamel starts.
  3. When food particles are left in the mouth after eating, they become an excellent food source for bacteria in our mouth. Bacteria produce enzymes for digesting food which also damages the enamel of our teeth.
  4. Toothpaste is basic in nature. So, it neutralizes the acidic environment present inside our mouth, reducing the decay of tooth enamel.

Therefore, bacteria present inside the mouth cause enamel decay which can be stopped by the use of toothpaste.
