Question

What is tricarboxylic acid cycle? Describe its different steps.

Open in App
Solution

TCA cycle
•TCA cycle is also known as citric acid cycle, carbon dioxide is released from organic intermediates
•ATP is synthesized from ADP and inorganic phosphate via substrate level phosphorylation and electrons are captured by coenzyme
•The citric acid cycle completes the energy yielding oxidation of organic molecules and these events take place within the mitochondria matrix
Steps of TCA cycle
•C-C Bond formation to make citrate
•Isomerisation via hydration/ rehydration
•Oxidative decarboxylation to give 2 NADH
•Substrate level phosphorylation to give GTP
•Dehydrogenation to give reduced FADH2
•Hydration
•Hydrogenation to give NADH
