The addition of harmful substances to water which change its physical, chemical and biological properties is called water pollution.
Water pollutants are of following two types:
(i) Suspended pollutants: Bacteria, fungi, algae and protozoa
(ii) Dissolved pollutants: Salts of calcium, magnesium, etc., metals like iron and gases like carbon dioxide.
