Crops grown on elevated areas are called ‘upland crops’.
Turmeric, banana, and yam are grown in the uplands. These are sown with the arrival of rains and harvested in February-March.
Highlands are suitable for growing vegetables like brinjal, ladyfinger, ivy gourd, ridge guard, and cabbage. These are later sold in Vuyyuru Rythu bazaar, around 7 km from Penamakuru Village.
On the banks of River Krishna and upland areas of the village have fruit-bearing trees and orchards of guava, sapota, and papaya. As soil near the river contains more sand, it retains less moisture, making it suitable for growing fruit-bearing trees. Hence, crops like paddy do not grow well on sandy soils.
