Solution

Blood:

Blood is a connective tissue, which consists of a fluid matrix, plasma, and formed elements.

The blood looks red:

  1. The iron-containing complex protein known as haemoglobin is present in red blood cells (RBC).
  2. The haemoglobin contains red-colored compound heme, because of which the blood looks red in color.
  3. This heme compound helps in transporting oxygen in our blood.
  4. Heme is made up of a porphyrin ring which has an iron atom linked to it.
  5. As blood moves between the lungs and the tissues, it is the iron atom that binds oxygen reversibly.
