Dear Student
Some of the reforms adopted by the British to reform the Indian society are as follows
1. The British thought that the Indian society had to be transformed. Hence, new laws were enacted to put an end to the practice of Sati and to promote widow remarriage in 1829.
2. English Education Act was passed in 1835 to introduce Western curriculum in teachings. Hence learning of English language was highly encouraged.
3. Another reform was the enactment of the Caste Disabilities Removal Act in 1850 in which Christian converts were allowed to become heir to property.
But, these reforms only irritated and arouse the anger of Indians as the people were of the view that the reforms were against their religion and may hamper their customs and traditions.
Some of the Indians wanted to accept the reforms introduced by British as they wanted a change in the existing social practices.
