Menstrual Cycle:

  2. An egg is released from the Graafian follicle at the ovulatory phase of the menstrual cycle.
  3. The phases of the menstrual cycle are: Menstrual phase, follicular phase, ovulatory phase, and luteal phase.

Phases of the menstrual cycle:

Menstrual Phase:

During this phase elimination of endometrial lining through the vagina takes place.

Follicular Phase:

  1. During this phase egg cells start to mature in a sac-like structure called a follicle.
  2. It is stimulated by the FSH hormone released from the pituitary.

Ovulatory Phase:

  1. During this phase, the follicle matures to form a Graafian follicle and the mature egg cell is released.
  2. The egg travels down the fallopian tube for fertilization by sperm.

Luteal Phase:

  1. After the Graafian follicle releases its egg, it changes into the corpus luteum.
  2. This structure releases a hormone called progesterone.
  3. This hormone keeps your uterine lining thick and ready for a fertilized egg to implant.
