Question

What type of electronic configuration corresponds to the chemical nonreactivity of elements?

Open in App
Solution

  • The electronic configuration of an atom plays an important role in determining the chemical behavior of an element.
  • When the atoms of an element have completely filled the outermost shell, the element will be chemically unreactive.
  • For example, the noble gases (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, and Rn) have a completely filled outermost shell i.e. contains 8 electrons (except helium which has two valence electrons) in the outermost shell.
