Question
What types of bonds are strongest?
Open in App
Solution
Chemical bonds are formed by the transferring of electrons in terms of loss or gain or by the complete sharing of electrons.
The strongest bond is the covalent bond that is formed by the sharing of electrons.
The outer shell or valence shell electrons take part in the bond formation.
Every atom, element, or compound wants to become stable by completing the valence shell of electrons either by loss or gain of electrons.
Thus, covalent bonds are formed by equal sharing of electrons in atoms or groups of atoms.
The bonding can occur in similar types of molecules or different types of molecules as well.
Example: Hydrogen molecule
H
2
,
methane
(
CH
4
)
, etc.
The general sharing of electrons of an atom occurs as depicted in the picture.
Therefore, covalent bonds are strongest.
