Question

What volume of oxygen gas at NTP is necessary for complete combustion of 20 litre of propane measured at 27oC and 760 mm pressure ?

Open in App
Solution

The balanced equation is:
C3H81vol.1litre+5O25vol.5litre3CO2+4H2O

1 litre of propane requires = 5 litre of oxygen
20 litre of propane will require=5×20=100litre of oxygen at 760 nun pressure and 27oC.
This volume will be converted to NTP conditions.
Given conditions
P1=760mm
V1=100litre
T1=27+273=300K
NTP conditions
P2=760mm
V2=?
T2=273

Applying :

P1V1T1=P2V2T2

V2=P1V1T1×T2P2

=760×100300×273760=91.0litre
