What was common between the system of Ashramas and the system of varnas as developed by Brahmins

There was nothing common between the ashrama system and the varna system. The two were distinct systems. Varna system divided society into brahmins, kshatriyas, vaishyas and shudras. The ashrama system divided human life into four stages---brahmacharya, grihasta, vanaprastha and sanyasa.
