Dear student,
Chipko movement was a non-violent movement which began with the aim to prevent the illegal deforestation and destruction of forest and trees. This movement followed Gandhian methods of Satyagraha and non-violent resistance. It is named as the Chipko movement because people used to hug trees so as to prevent them from being cutting down .
It began in the early 1970s in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, then in Uttar Pradesh. It developed an awareness towards rapid deforestation. Sunder Lal Bahuguna, an eminent environmentalist, was the architect of the the Chipko movement. Women in large numbers participated in this movement.
