Dear Student,

In the 18th century, England started setting up its own textile industries​​​​. The British textile manufacturers were worried by the popularity of Indian textiles and they protested against the import of Indian cotton textiles. In 1720, the British government enacted a legislation banning the use of Indian printed cotton textile -Chintz in England. This Act was popularly came to be known as Calico act.
