What were the circumstances which led to the eventual collapse of Indigo production in Bengal?
Indigo production in Bengal fell because of peasants not ready to grow Indigo due to various reasons such as low prices, no profits and the resultant infertile land.
After the revolt of 1857, the government did not wish for another revolt to start, so they introduced a commission which provided the peasants to grow other crops.
Following events led to the collapse of Indigo production in Bengal:
The ryots in Bengal refused to cultivate Indigo. They protested against the government for the freedom to grow other crops. Village Heads and Zamindars supported the ryots in their protest. Indigo commission was set up the government to avoid another revolt. The commission found the planters guilty as they mistreated the farmers.
