Buddha preached ahimsa, morality, equality, and brotherhood. After his death, the followers were divided into two sects: Hinayana and Mahayana.

• Hinayana: Those who strictly follow the doctrine of Buddha and deny the existence of God are known as the followers of the Lesser Vehicle. They didn’t believe in Idol worship, performed simple rituals, and preached in Pali.
  
• The term Mahayana means Greater Vehicle of salvation. Mahayana Buddhists believe that Buddha was an incarnation of God. They worship statues of Buddha and believe in Buddha's previous births. This sect introduced idol worship and performed complex rituals and ceremonies. They wrote their scriptures in Sanskrit.
