The events that led to the establishment of republican form of government in France was the unwillingness of the king to accept limitations on his powers. Even after the Revolution. the revolutionaries wanted France to be a constitutional monarchy and this was the system of government that was established under the Constitution of 1791.
However, the king was not willing to accept limits on his powers. He would repeatedly veto legislation passed by the Legislative Assembly. He sought support from foreign monarchs. This led to repeated constitutional crisis, fears of foreign invasion and violence in France. Finally, on September 22, 1792, the revolutionaries declared France to be a republic.
