What were the limitations of Newlands’ Law of Octaves?

Open in App
Solution

Newlands’ Law of Octaves:

  • Newland arranged the elements in the increasing order of their atomic weights and found that every eighth element has similar properties as the first element.
  • On this basis, he gave the law of octaves.

Limitations of Newlands’ Law of Octaves:

  • Many elements were placed in the same slot in this classification. For example, Cobalt and Nickel.
  • Some elements having dissimilar properties were also placed together.
  • The law was valid up to calcium element.
  • The elements discovered later could not be placed in the octave pattern.
