The word dhamma means religious duty. As described in Ashokan edicts, it is a code of conduct.

The principles of Ashoka’s dhamma are as follows-
  • We should live together in peace and harmony.
  • We should be friendly and not engage in conflict over land or religion.
  • We should follow ahimsa, or non-violence.
  • Children should obey elders and elders should treat children with kindness.
  • We should be kind to slaves and servants.
  • We should be truthful and charitable.
  • We should reject unnecessary rituals.
