Question

What will be the molarity of the solutoin containing 18.25 g of HCl gas in 500 g of water ?

(a) 0.1 m (b) 1 M (c) 0.5 m (d) 1 m

Solution

(d)

Molarity is defined as the number of moles of solute present in 1 kg of solvent. It is denoted by m.

Thus, Molarity(m)=Moles of soluteMass of solvent (in kg) ...(i)

Given that, Mass of solvent (H2O)=500 g=0.5 kg

Weight of HCl = 18.25 g

Molecular weight of HCl =1×1+1×35.5=36.5g

Moles of HCl =18.2536.5=0.5

m=0.50.5=1m [from Eq. (i)]
