Question

What will happen if we keep a plant cell or animal cell in a (i)Hypotonic solution (ii) hypertonic solution (iii)Isotonic solution

Solution

Dear student,
Hypotonic solution:
The plant and animal cell will both imbibe water and water will flow inside both the cells by the process of endosmosis. If the solution is to dilute the animal cell can burst as it does not have a cell wall and the plant cell membrane will apply pressure to the cell wall and will be pressed against it.

Hypertonic solution:
The plant and animal cell will lose water by exosmosis. The animal cell will shrink while the plant cell will remain intact but the cell membrane would also shrink with it and the process called as plasmolysis occurs in a plant cell.

Isotonic solution:
There will be no impact on the either of the cells.
