Solution

Importance of kidneys

  1. In humans, kidneys are the chief organs of excretion.
  2. They help in the elimination of nitrogenous waste products and help in maintaining fluid balance.
  3. They also help in purifying the blood.
  4. Humans possess a pair of kidneys in the abdominal cavity.
  5. If one of the kidneys is damaged, the remaining single kidney is capable of performing the functions properly.
  6. But if both the kidneys are damaged, it leads to death.
  7. The reason for this is the excessive accumulation of nitrogenous products in blood.
  8. To help such a patient, an artificial kidney-like equipment is used.
  9. This device performs the functions of the kidney but is outside the body.
