Litmus paper:

  1. Litmus paper is a filter paper that has been treated with a lichen-provided natural-soluble dye.
  2. Litmus paper is a piece of paper that produces a result that can be used as a pH indicator.
  3. Litmus is mainly used to assess whether a solution is acidic or basic.
  4. With light blue litmus paper turning red under acidic conditions and red litmus paper turning blue under basic or alkaline conditions.
  5. Purple litmus paper is neutral.

Ferric Chloride:

  1. Ferric Chloride is a dark color crystal with the oxidation state of iron being +3.
  2. It is also called Iron (III) chloride or Molysite. It is an iron coordination entity that functions as an astringent and Lewis acid.
  3. The chemical formula of Ferric Chloride is FeCl3.

(iv) Blue litmus is introduced into a solution of ferric chloride:

  1. Ferric Chloride solution reacting with water will form ferric hydroxide and hydrochloric acid.
  2. Since the acid is strong, so the solution will be acidic. Therefore, the color of blue litmus will change into a red color.
