What would be the number of chromosomes in (i) microspore mother cell and (ii) microspore if the sporogenous cell has 20 chromosomes?
(i) 20, (ii) 10
All the cells of sporogenous tissue are diploid. If the sporogenous cells have 20 chromosomes the microspore mother cells will also possess 20 chromosomes as they are formed by mitosis of sporogenous cells. Microspores will have half the number of chromosomes as in the microspore mother cells as they are products of meiotic division of the PMC. Hence, in this case microspores will have 10 chromosomes.
