Solution

  1. Plants are autotrophic organisms that can synthesize their own food by utilizing raw materials like water and carbon dioxide.
  2. In a food chain, green plants are also called producers as they are the prime synthesizers of energy that circulate in the living world.
  3. The energy stored in plants is transferred to organisms that feed on them. Some other organisms consume plant-eating organisms with a dominating level in a food chain. In this manner, energy from one level of the food chain is transferred to the next.
  4. Plants are also important for supplying oxygen to the atmosphere, which is consumed by other organisms for their survival.

If plants are removed from the planet, it might lead to the following consequences:

1. Increased levels of carbon dioxide and low levels of oxygen

  1. In the absence of plants, the carbon dioxide released by living organisms will not be fixed and thus will remain in the atmosphere. This will leads to global warming.
  2. Also, the level of atmospheric oxygen will reduce, which plants release.
  3. This will create anoxic conditions for other organisms that depend on oxygen and slowly leads to their extinction.

2. No supply of food and energy

  1. As plants are the main producers of energy and food, their elimination will cause an imbalance in the food chain.
  2. In the absence of plants, the whole ecosystem will collapse.

Reasons that can lead to the extinction of plants

1. Overexploitation of forests

  1. Man cutting more and more trees for their benefit will someday lead to the disappearance of trees and plants from this planet.

2. Overgrazing

  1. The animal that relies on plants when uncontrollably feed/graze, is called overgrazing.
  2. This may lead to the disappearance of grass and other green plants with time.
