Question

What would you observe on adding dilute hydrochloric acid to sodium bicarbonate placed in a test tube?

Solution

  • When an acid reacts with metal carbonate or metal bicarbonate(Metal hydrogen carbonate) it forms salt of that metal along with water (H2O) and carbon dioxide(CO2).

The reaction of dilute hydrochloric acid with sodium bicarbonate:

  • Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) reacts with dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl) to form sodium chloride (NaCl), carbon dioxide (CO2) , and water (H2O).

Reaction involved:

  • NaHCO3(s)+HCl(aq)NaCl(aq)+CO2(g)+H2O(aq)
  • The production of carbon dioxide (CO2) causes brisk effervescence (rapid production of gas).

Test for production of carbon dioxide:

  • Carbon dioxide reacts with lime water (Ca(OH)2) and forms a white precipitate of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) with water (H2O), this reaction indicates the presence of carbon dioxide.
  • CO2(g)+Ca(OH)2(aq)CaCO3(s)+H2O(l)
  • Therefore, we observe brisk effervescence on adding dilute hydrochloric acid to sodium bicarbonate.
