Lipids:
- Lipids are defined as organic compounds, that are insoluble in water.
- In the human body, these molecules are usually synthesized in the liver.
- They are composed of a phosphodiester group attached to a long fatty acid hydrocarbon chain.
There are generally 2 major types of lipids:
- Simple lipids –– Fats & waxes are eg. of simple lipids.
- Complex lipids — Phospholipids and sphingolipids are eg. complex lipids.
Significance of Lipids
- Lipids play a crucial role in the human body. They are the main source of energy, that provides energy & produces hormones in the body.
- They are structural components of cell membranes.
- These lipids are also involved in the cell signaling, digestion, and absorption of food.
