When 20.8g of Barium chloride is added with 14.2g of Sodium sulphate, 23.3g of Barium sulphate and 11.7g of Sodium chloride are formed. Show that these observations are in agreement with the law of conservation of mass.

  • The law of conservation of mass states that mass can neither be created nor be lost but it can be conserved.
  • Thus, from the law of conservation of mass, the total mass of reactants is equal to the total mass of products in any chemical reaction.

Step 2: Identify reactants and products:

From the given data,

When 20.8g of Barium chloride (BaCl2) is added with 14.2g of Sodium sulphate (Na2SO4), 23.3g of Barium sulphate (BaSO4) and 11.7g of Sodium chloride (NaCl) are formed.

BaCl2(aq)+Na2SO4(aq)BaSO4(s)+2NaCl(aq)

Reactants are 20.8g of Barium chloride and 14.2g of Sodium sulphate.

Products are 23.3g of Barium sulphate and 11.7g of Sodium chloride.

Step 3: Apply the law of conservation of mass:

According to the law of conservation of mass,

Total mass of reactants = Total mass of products

Thus,

Mass of Barium chloride + Mass of Sodium sulphate = Mass of Barium sulphate + Mass of Sodium chloride

Thus,

20.8g+14.2g=23.3g+11.7g35.0g=35.0g

Thus, the total mass of reactants and the total mass of products are equal.

Hence, the observations are in agreement with the law of conservation of mass.
