When an iron rod is dipped in silver nitrate solution, it becomes silverish. Explain the reason.

Solution

The standard electrode potential of Iron(Fe) is 0.44 V and that of Silver(Ag) is 0.80V. So, iron is a more active metal which displaces silver from its solution and silver gets deposited on iron rod. Due to this, iron rod becomes silverish when it is dipped in silver nitrate solution. This is an example of displacement reaction.

Fe+2AgNO3Fe(NO3)2+2Ag
