Wurtz reaction id a single-electron transfer reaction. Here free radical mechanism takes place. The mechanism of Wurtz reaction of bromoethane is :
C2H5-Br +Na° C2H5° + NaBrC2H5° + C2H5° C2H5-C2H5C2H5° +C2H5° C2H6 +C2H4
Therefore, ethane and ethene are also formed alongwith n-butane.
