Question

when can a process be spontaneous? the equilibrium constant for a reaction is 10 what will be the sign for delta G? will this reaction be spontaneous?

Solution

Dear Student,

A process or reaction is spontaneous when the Gibbs Free Energy, G, of the system is negative.

The relationship between Gibbs Free Energy and the equilibrium constant is:

GO = -RT ln(Keq)
Since R and T are positive, and ln 10 is 2.302 , G will be negative when Keq is 10.
So, the reaction will be spontaneous.
