Battle of Pratapgad was fought between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Adilshahi General Afzal Khan of BIjapur. This battle was fought for supremacy in the Deccan (Southern) region. It was won by Shivaji and established Maratha forces as a dominant player in the Deccan region. Maratha army utilized the "Guerrilla warfare" tactics to defeat the large and heavily outnumbered army of Afzal Khan in the mountainous area of Pratapgad. This technique of attack by surprise was to remain as one of the most successful strategy in the Deccan region benefiting Maratha forces.
