Question

When excess of Na2S2O3 is added to dil.AgNO3, a soluble compound ‘X’ is formed. However, when dil. Na2S2O3 is added to conc. AgNO3 solution, a white precipitate turns yellow and finally black. Precipitate ‘Y’ is formed here. Which is the correct pair?

Solution

The correct option is B ‘X’ is Na3[Ag(S2O3)2] and ‘Y’ is Ag2S
In excess thiosulphate, dil.AgNO3 forms a soluble complex.
Na2S2O3(excess)+dil.AgNO3Na3[Ag(S2O3)2]+NaNO3
But when conc.AgNO3 reacts with dilute thiosulphate, it gives a white precipitate of silver thiosulphate which changes to yellow and finally gives a black precipitate of Ag2S.
dil.Na2S2O3+2AgNO3Ag2S2O3(white ppt)+2NaNO3
Ag2S2O3Ag2S+H2SO4
So X=Na3[Ag(S2O3)2],Y=Ag2S
