During the release of ovum, the uterus prepares for a possible fertilisation. It develops a thick wall so as to receive the embryo.

However, when there is no fertilisation, the uterine wall begins to disintegrate.

This process is called menstruation which occurs with discharge of blood, mucus and unfertilised egg through the vagina.

Menarche is the beginning of the first cycle of menstruation.

Gestation is the period of developing of an embryo inside the womb between conception and birth.

Menopause is the complete stoppage of menstruation.
