Question

When I was eating chips, I noticed there very fine grains of spices on its surface. I tried to shake it off, but they weren't that easy to get rid of.
I wondered whether this is a case of adsorption. I'm such a nerd huh.
What do you think?

Solution

The correct option is B

No way!

Although it seems quite intriguing to consider this as a case of adsorption, it is absolutely not. Let's think about this more deeply.

Adsorption is a molecular level phenomenon. That means that individual molecules need to go and develop bonds with the surfaces of other substances and 'stick' to it, to put it loosely. Also, adsorption has properties like spontaneity.
In our spices on chips case however, if we actually look closely, those spices are just some small particles which are made of millions of atoms and it just so happens that our imagination of molecules matches with that of the spice particles.
So, this is just a case of 2 different surfaces touching each other and not adsorption. If we call this adsorption, then we should call a cup on a saucer as adsorption too!
