Question

When is a solution said to be saturated? How can you change a saturated solution into an unsaturated solution without adding any more solvent to it? Explain in brief.

Solution

  • Solute dissolves in a solvent and gives rise to a solution.
  • If the amount of solute that can be dissolved in a solvent is maximum, then that solution is called a saturated solution.
  • If we dissolve sugar in water and keep on adding sugar into it, after some time a point will be achieved where no sugar dissolves in the solvent. Then this sugar solution can be called a saturated solution.
  • The solution before reaching the saturation point is an unsaturated solution that contains less amount of solute.

We can change saturated solution into unsaturated solution by increasing temperature.

While increasing the temperature, solvent molecules will get the energy to break the solute particles thereby increasing the dissolving rate.
