When large herbivores are not available to eat the older stemmy grass, the smaller herbivores do not get their food source, which is the more tender grass. This was the main reason for the disappearance of Oribi from Gorongosa National Park.
Oribi is a small antelope. It feeds mostly on the tender grass. The older grass is unpalatable to them. The larger herbivores such as wild buffaloes can eat this grass. They also trample most of them during migration, allowing new smaller grass to grow. The disappearance of big herbivores led to the growth of large, stemmy grass that could not support the oribi, causing their disappearance.
