Surface fension is a property which results due to imbalance of intermolecular forces.i.e. cohesive forces between molecules.
when liquid water is spilled on surface it forms a sperical shape on surface due to surface tension.
when mercury is spilled on surface small drops of mercury take spherical shape but bigger drops take oval shape due to surface tension.
