Question

Where can turgor pressure be observed?

Open in App
Solution

Turgidity:

  1. The cell swells as a result of the extra water entering the cell.
  2. The enlarged cell is referred to be turgid, and the condition is known as turgidity.
  3. High levels of fluid in a cell cause turgor.

Turgor pressure:

  1. When due to turgidity, high fluid content exerts pressure on the plasma membrane or cell membrane against the cell wall, it is called turgor pressure.
  2. When the cell absorbs the water content inside the cell, whenever placed in a hypotonic solution, it makes the cell turgid.
  3. This turgidity results in turgid, swollen cells.
  4. We can observe this phenomenon in dried seeds, raisins, etc.
  5. When dried seeds and raisins are placed in water, they become turgid.
  6. In such cases, the cells of seeds or raisins show the phenomenon of turgidity and we can observe turgor pressure in such types of turgid cells.
  7. As only plants, fungi and bacteria have the cell wall, where this phenomenon can take place.

We can observe turgor pressure in turgid cells of Plants, Fungi, and Bacteria.
