Question 6
Where do the lipids and proteins constituting the cell membrane gets synthesized?

Open in App
Solution

Cell membrane synthesis:

  1. The cell membrane is made up of bilayer of phospholipid (a kind of lipid) and proteins embedded in it.
  2. The synthesis of proteins and lipids takes place in the endoplasmic reticulum.
  3. It is of two types- smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) and rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER).
  4. The lipid synthesis occurs in the smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER).
  5. Rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) has ribosomes attached to its membrane.
  6. Ribosomes are the factory of all protein being synthesised in the cell.
  7. Therefore, membrane proteins are also synthesised by rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER).

Final answer:

The lipids and proteins constituting the cell membrane gets synthesised in smooth

endoplasmic reticulum (SER)

and

rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER)

, respectively.
