Question

Where is ATP made in bacteria?

Open in App
Solution

ATP and Bacteria:

  1. In bacteria, ATP synthase uses the proton gradient created by the terminal oxidases to synthesize ATP.
  2. Different terminal oxidases from E. coli and Salmonella are active under various growth situations.

The location of ATP in bacteria:

  1. The plasma membrane houses both the ETC ( electron transport chain) and the ATP synthase.
  2. Electron carriers like NADH and FADH2 transport hydrogen ions and electrons from the cytoplasm to the plasma membrane to maximize energy production.
  3. ATP is produced during cellular respiration.
  4. Some bacteria can produce a proton gradient and so ATP by using light.
  5. Glycolysis generates some ATP (cell energy storage).
  6. Aerobic respiration makes ATP from glucose and oxygen (along with carbon dioxide and water).
  7. Photophosphorylation is a process found only in plants and cyanobacteria.
  8. It is the production of ATP from ADP using solar energy during photosynthesis.
