Question

Where is chemiosmosis in photosynthesis?

Open in App
Solution

Chemiosmosis:

Chemiosmosis is the movement of ions from one side to another of a semipermeable membrane in their electrochemical gradient.

The location of chemiosmosis in photosynthesis:

  1. In chloroplasts, for example, an electron transport chain transfers H+ ions (protons) from the stroma (fluid) through the thylakoid membrane to the thylakoid gaps during photosynthesis.
  2. Chemiosmosis occurs mainly in the thylakoids of chloroplast.
  3. It causes a proton gradient to develop across the semipermeable cell membrane, which is linked to the creation of ATP molecules.
