Luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) are secreted by the anterior pituitary under the influence of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) secreted by the hypothalamus. FSH and LH are gonadotropins.

FSH stimulates the growth and development of ovarian follicles.

Surge or oversecretion of LH leads to the rupture of the Graafian follicle resulting in the formation of corpus luteum.
