Which among the following is a post-fertilisation event in human beings?
Human beings reproduce sexually.
Sexual reproduction involves the following events in human beings.
1. Pre-fertilisation events include gametogenesis and transfer of gametes.
Gametogenesis is the process of formation of gametes. The production of sperms (male gametes) is called spermatogenesis and formation of ova (female gametes) is called oogenesis.
The male gametes are transferred into the female genital tract by penis. This is called insemination.
2. Fertilisation involves the fusion of male and female gametes. The male gametes (sperms) reach the fallopian tubes, and if the sperm comes in contact with the ovum (secondary oocyte), then there is a chance of fertilisation. The male and female gamete fuse resulting in the formation of zygote.
3. Post-fertilisation events begin if fertilisation occurs. The following are the post-fertilisation events.
The zygote divides and forms into a multicellular structure blastocyst that gets implanted in the uterus. Implantation is the intimate attachment of blastocyst to the uterine wall. The blastocyst eventually develops into an embryo. The embryo develops into a new organism.
