The early nationalist also known as moderates did not see poverty in India as inherent and unavoidable. It was seen as man-made and therefore capable of being explained and removed. Second statement is correct.
The growing differences between the Moderates and the Extremists came at Surat Session 1907, when against the wishes of Extremists who preferred Lala Laj Pal Rai to be the President; Dr. Rash Behrai Ghosh was elected as the Congress President. The Extremists left the Congress. After the Surat Split, most of the extremist leaders including Lal,Bal,Pal were arrested and were given long term imprisonment.
