The apes are classified in the superfamily Hominoidea. Hominoids are the group of primates which include chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans and gibbons. These are collectively known as the 'great apes'.
Further evolutionary investigations showed humans show striking similarities to chimpanzees, about 98.8% of the gene sequence are also similar and hence they become the closest relative to humans.
