Surendranath Banerjee was called the Indian Burke. He is compared to Edward Burke, an Irish politician and an excellent orator who could command an entire audience. He was born in 1848 and is widely known as the "Father of Indian Nationalism". In 1869, Surendranath Banerjee cleared the Indian Civil Services Examination and was appointed as an Assistant Magistrate in Sylhet. In 1876, he was elected to the Calcutta Municipal Corporation. He was also a member of the Bengal Legislative Council in 1894, 1896, 1900.
