Which amongst the following gas is formed during the incomplete combustion of carbon?
Carbon monoxide
When carbon undergoes complete combustion, in the presence of oxygen, carbon dioxide (CO2) is produced. However, if the relative amount of carbon increases or that of oxygen decreases, the reaction takes place as given below:
2C(s)+O2(g)→2CO(g)
This is called incomplete combustion of carbon. The gas formed during this is carbon monoxide(CO), a poisonous gas.
