A biosafety level, also known as a pathogen protection level, is a biocontainment precaution used in laboratories to isolate harmful biological agents.
It ranges from the lowest biosafety level - 1 to the highest biosafety level – 4.
The microbes in biosafety level – 4 are extremely dangerous and highly infectious.
There is a high chance of transmission of these microbes through aerosol.
If transmission happens, there is no treatment or vaccines available for these infections.
Because of the very high health hazard and risks, biosafety level - 4 is the one that carries the greatest risk.
